Marina
Saadi Halil, acrylic on canvas 2015
An imposing, beautiful, and ornate structure inspired by classic Greek and Roman architecture from antiquity, The Palace of Fine Arts is the only surviving structure on site from the 1915 World's Fair. The Fair was an important global demonstration of resilience and reconstruction after the devastating 1906 Earthquake that destroyed more than 80% of the city. It sits in the Marina District, surrounded by a wan filled lagoon and a semi-circle, open-air colonnade. The structure has appeared in numerous films, shows and art pieces and was an obvious pick for Saadi as the monumental representative for The Marina District. Going off the name of the building, Saadi painted this in an impressionist style (his first ever attempt at such a style). As a tribute to the French founders of the art form, there is an easter egg in the painting. If you look closely, you will see the French tricolor flag painted on to the dome (and its reflection) which is also used to show depth and shadow.
