Castro

Saadi Halil, acrylic on canvas 2015

The Castro was one of the first distinctly "gay neighborhoods" in the United States;  it continues to be recognized as a prominent center both nationally and globally for LGBTQI+ activism and events. It is a beacon for those longing to be surrounded by not only acceptance, but encouragement to explore individualism with no limits on the right to self-expression. San Francisco hosts one of the largest Pride parades in the country and the Castro is the beating heart of Pride month in June.

The painting portrays a diverse group of individuals celebrating Pride with The famed Castro Theater (a historical land mark from 1922 with ornate Baroque decorations inside and out) in the back ground.
